My Favorite Things: Jewelry ***giveaway***

I love jewelry. I love having the perfect necklace to finish a special outfit (like this simple, yet elegant turquoise piece), and having an “everyday” necklace that’s anything but “everyday” brings me just as much joy. I don’t change out of my stud earrings often, but when I do I’m almost guaranteed to be wearing these lovelies.

I could go on and on about my recent obsession with jewelry (like this necklace that I just HAD TO HAVE) but there’s really only one thing you need to know…

Here’s my secret.

Jewelry Made by Maggie.

That’s it! That, my friends, is my secret to always having the perfect accessory for any occasion. Ok, so it’s really no big secret. With nearly 3K facebook fans and a hoppin’ etsy shop she started just 5 years ago, you KNOW she’s doing something right! If you haven’t checked out her stuff, you better get a move on.

I was able to get Maggie to share a little about her business and what it’s like being a WAHM (work at home mom) and wanted to share it with you!

So Maggie, how did Made by Maggie get started?

Back in 2009, I used to do craft nights with some awesome girlfriends. They would scrapbook and knit and I would bring whatever was my project of the week. One night I brought a bunch of jewelry making supplies and they loved my designs! They introduced me to etsy.com and inspired and encouraged me to start a little shop in their vintage and handmade online marketplace. The rest is history! Oh, and my sweet sister Katie gets the credit for the name, Made by Maggie. Totally her idea.

What’s your favorite thing about designing jewelry?

I love being surprised when something out of the ordinary or quirky inspires me. The other day, I thought of a new shape for earrings when I was in the shower swirling hair on the wall, no joke! I know that’s kinda gross, but I felt like Doc when he hit his head on the toilet and invented the Flux Capacitor! (Haha…that’s awesome!)

What’s the best part about being a WAHM?

My morning commute is a flight of stairs with a cup of coffee in my hands! I also have a giant studio/workshop/play space in my home with tons of natural light. Oooooh, I’m so lucky!

What’s the hardest thing about being a WAHM?

My kids are usually home when I’m trying to get work done, so just finding the right balance is a constant struggle. I try not to let mom guilt take over, and the kids play (destroy stuff) in my workspace with me!

Have any tips for keeping jewelry looking its best?

It’s best not to sleep, shower, exercise, or sweat a lot while wearing your jewelry. Store it in a cool, dry place, like an airtight container (i.e. plastic bag, plastic container with lid, etc.) to minimize tarnish/oxidation. A silver polishing cloth is a must have; you can shine things right up!

What are essential pieces every mommy should have?

Long and layered pieces that have subtle shimmer and are versatile. I love pieces that work for casual everyday and to dress up and go out at night! My long or layered coin pearl necklace is perfect for that and it’s probably the reason it has been a top seller for 4 years now!

What’s your current favorite piece?

My new long hammered dangle earrings! They’re my go-to earrings almost everyday!
