Food Allergy Resource: Allergy IDs with GIVEAWAY!

Oh my friends, if you or anyone you know has a child with food allergies this is a post that should not be overlooked!  Scratch that, this post and giveaway go beyond food allergies…if you or someone you know has a child, food allergies or not, read on!

When we signed Buddy up for preschool this year, I knew I was going to need to be picky with my choice of school and making sure that school had good policies in place, and ones that I was comfortable with, regarding food allergies.  I feel very lucky to have found that as this was the first time Buddy would be away from the care of a family member.  As I prepared to send him off to preschool I did a lot of thinking about how I wanted things handled at school, how I would best communicate the severity of his allergies, and how I would make it easy for anyone to know and keep track of exactly what allergies Buddy lives with (remember, he’s currently allergic to 11 foods/food categories so it’s hard for Hubby and I to keep track of it all, let alone those who don’t live with him).  This last point made me most nervous.  What if there is a sub?  What if they are in a large group/whole school setting? Outside of school, what if he is with a babysitter who needs a quick reference?  What if he has a reaction and paramedics need to know his allergies/medications and I’m not there yet?  I needed a reference point that I knew could be on him…literally on him…at all times.  Sure his classroom has all of his information with his EpiPens but I was desperate for something more.  I looked into getting him a medical alert bracelet and decided that wasn’t for us.

I wanted something comfortable, durable, and yes, I wanted something cute.  I didn’t think this existed until I finally turned to etsy and found Katie at The Owl and the Firefly.

Food Allergy Resources: Keep Me Safe Cuff

Katie knows what’s up.  She has a whole line of these durable, comfortable, kid-friendly, and yes, CUTE cuff style bracelets for kids.  She calls it the Keep Me Safe Cuff and I absolutely love it!  Each cuff is made from durable, comfortable, hand-washable cotton fabric and includes a label on the outside indicating either “Keep Me Safe Cuff,” “Allergy Alert,” or whatever you want (Katie is great to work with if you need something custom…she customized our top and bottom labels for us!) and indicating that important information is on the underside.  The label on the underside has places for your child’s name, date of birth, medications he or she takes (if you don’t need this you could have Katie take it off for you but allergy moms will definitely want to list what medications their child uses to manage reactions), allergies (if applicable), and emergency contact phone numbers.  You can see close-ups of the labels in her etsy shop!

These cuffs fit children from ages 2-10 and have 3 different snap settings so you can adjust the fit for your child as he grows.  Katie offers a variety of fabric styles so there is sure to be something you and your child will love!  Buddy has a baseball print and a checkerboard print.  I love having two of them for him as it gives him some control in choosing the one he wants to wear each day.  Here are just a few of the cute, cute, cute fabrics Katie has to offer.

Food Allergy Resources: Keep Me Safe Cuff

The Keep Me Safe Cuff gives me great peace of mind knowing Buddy always has the necessary emergency information needed on him.  As every allergy momma knows, time is of the essence in an anaphylactic situation and this cuff provides everything needed.  But this cuff goes so far beyond allergies…it would be fabulous in many situations!  Katie mentions in her listings that these cuffs would be great for children with epilepsy, autism, and more.  I can’t help but think it would also be terrific if you have a child who has a tendency to wander off.  These would be great to have for field trip days too! The possibilities are endless.

Here’s Buddy wearing his in the checkerboard pattern.  I think this one is his favorite. 🙂
